Observation details

Originally posted as Baltimore Oriole because that's what Merlin ID'd it as, unwaiveringly, and I was more focused on the Laughing Gull report. I don't agree with Merlin sound ID at all on this one. After much debate I found the function on Merlin that I can highlight the recording and get an ID by song pattern. Merlin agrees with me on the pattern to be Summer Tanager. First heard "per-teter-chunk" call as I was walking. Stopped immediately and turned on Merlin, but Merlin would not pick it up the song. (Merlin consistently wanted to make this a Baltimore Oriole, but I suspect that's because of the constant background noise of wind, Carolina Wren, and Ovenbird, and that Summer Tanager is rare at this point, so I wonder if it's being filtered out of the possible results.). Bird was on top of pine tree deep in woods, so could not see it. Tone is not as raspy as I would associate with Scarlet, and sound is not true/clear whistle-like enough for Baltimore Oriole. Recording obtained, I'll either post whole thing or see if I can crop pieces of the song out. Carolina Wren and Ovenbird were constantly singing over it.
