Observation details
***very rare. Dark-backed Aythya with pale gray, not white sides, and a faint pattern on the bill resembling Ring-necked Duck. The head was fairly tall and shallow on the backside, with an obvious high peak that sloped fairly straightly downward. The head was closer in size and shape as nearby Lesser Scaup than Greater Scaup. The head shape contrasted with RNDU x GRSC hybrids from this year and last year (e.g. https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/616011602), which were large- and deep-headed. A subtle difference, but I think this is right.
