Observation details

Following the discovery of a dead male Cape Eagle-Owl in a trap set by the local community (https://ebird.org/checklist/S213177927), we decided to see if the bird had a mate in the area. A calling owl flew past us (see recording https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/631608395). It settled down some distance from us and started singing (see recording https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/631608396). We were able to locate, view, and digibin it (see photo). We noted its blotched rather than barred lower breast and proportionally enormous feet.
