Observation details
While near Azhikkal Beach, I came across a small bird with striking features. Its head, upperparts, and upper tail were all black, while its underparts were a soft off-white with a noticeable broad breast band dotted with white spots. The bird had a long tail, and the underside of the tail appeared paler than the uppertail. Interestingly, it occasionally spread its tail fully, fanning it out like a delicate hand-held fan. The bird was quite vocal, emitting a continuous single-note call. One of the most distinctive features was its narrow white eyebrow, which contrasted with its black head, setting it apart from the White-browed Fantail. After carefully observing these details, I concluded that it was a Spot-breasted Fantail. The bird’s unique appearance and behavior made this encounter particularly special and memorable.
