Observation details
With mixed flock of ~100 ducks in flooded fields on opposite side of Bel Marin Keys Blvd. from Pacheco Pond, about here (38.080866, -122.529819); viewed from knoll (38.079878, -122.528795). Not an adult male, so apparently a new bird; seemingly a good winter for them. Slightly smaller than scaup and Ring-necked Duck; dark head with very limited tuft (not obvious when actively feeding); orange-yellow eye; bluish bill with dark tip and paler subterminal band; blackish back; contrastingly paler flanks; dark brown breast. Difficult to study and photograph because it was distant and constantly diving, but didn't seem to show any signs of being a hybrid.
