Media notes

Two Mottled Owls settled side-by-side onto a horizontal branch ca. 10’ above ground in the forest understory along trail to the tower at 4:48am (before sunrise) and gave a short series of very quiet, slurred, single-note calls that were scarcely audible. They were calls I had never heard MOOW give before. The birds did not stay on that perch to roost, as they were gone shortly afterward. I had to suppress everything above 1200Hz just to hear them above the insects et al. Recorded with a Zoom-F3, using a Wildtronics MicroMic XLR Microphone in a Wildtronics Pro Mini Parabola.

Observation details

heard and seen from the trail before sunrise on a dark, gloomy morning; two birds settled side by side ca. 10' off the ground in forest understory at 4:50am and gave a short series of very quiet, low-pitched, single-note calls that were scarcely audible and hopeless to record (given all the insects); they were low-pitched, single-note slurred calls that RAR had never heard before; I'll attach a very poor recording;
