Observation details
Seen swimming next to a Greater White-Fronted Goose (GWFG) on Northern lake for comparison. Loosely associated with over 1000 Canada/cackling on the same pond. This individual was on average smaller with a darker brown back than GWFG. Neck appeared to be slightly shorter and darker than GWFG. Head structure slightly different, appearing boxier. Dark nape extending to the top of the head and extending down below the eye, similar to a Cackling Goose (CACG) or Canada Goose (CANG). White completely surrounding the upper part of the bill with some messy speckling of white on the face. Bill is a dark pink/gray, and quite abrupt, most likely ruling out a CANG hybrid. This bird was much smaller than nearby CANG. Overall structure of the bird was reminiscent of CACG. Also given the overlapping breeding range, GWFG x CACG seems more likely than GWFG x CANG. Photos screenshotted from scoped video at close range (~50-80ft).
