Observation details
17 males and 5 females! This is the highest total I have ever recorded within Gifu City. In the last 20 years, the usual count in one year is between zero and 3. This must be part of a big exodus away from the Sea of Japan and the cold heavy snow front. The wind is 3 meters per second from the North-West. I cycled past this site again around 5pm - sunset - and did a re-count. There were now 29. Another 7 females had joined the flock to roost overnight. Sadly, the following morning, the flock was gone. The last time that huge flocks of Baikal Teal were found in Gifu City was in the early 1980s.
