Observation details
Originally discovered and photographed by me on June 18, the Yellow-crowned night-heron was in the same yard again today. It flew into the woods behind the house at about 7:45am. I watched the bird from the road for an extended period and was interested to note its feeding behavior. The heron walked slowly through the grass (not mowed for some time) and would cock its head to the side, lowering it to within a few inches of the ground. It would then frequently jab its bill into the grass/ground. At least twice it caught what appeared to be something dark and gangly. My best guess is that toads (and possibly grubs?) were its victims. I once again was able to get iPhone photos. Mark Hainen showed up around 7:35 and was able to obtain some very good quality photographs including the one posted here. The fact that this bird has apparently been present in the same area for three weeks or more certainly presents the enticing possibility of nearby nesting. It has been decades since this species has been known to nest in the Toledo area.
