NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut#5. Extra cut length: 12:00; 11:08; 4:50; 7:48; 7:26Weather: cloudy fair Started @5:20AM. Ortalis motmot sang nearby at 5:20. Others and also Hypnelus ruficollis and Myiarchus venezuelensis sang in background (recording not saved). First sound of Pyroderus @~5:22 1/2, then hear birds flying in and song started for short period. Then after period of silence, song again. At ~5:30 it was getting light enough to be able to see and could spot~ 6-8 birds. Then noted 6-8 displaying males, then noted female (comments on tape). Eventually note a second female5:40AM cloudy; Leader tape 5:45AM; Continues (with comments). At ~5:44 birds suddenly left but then returned (voice comments). Then most of birds left again, then immediately started returning. Then apparently at least some moved to a different area to display. Then some returned. Then apparently left (6:11 AM).Leader tape 6:21AM. During the interval (part of the interval is filed as Cut 3 of Atalotriccus polaris [LNS 66610.mf]) there is very little activity. During much of the time the few birds around were mostly in the peripheral (lek) area. AT ~6:17 there were none present at all.Birds started to return ~6:20/6:21. Voice comments about how they fly low. A number of additional voice comments, many important. Observations and recording ceased at 7:04AM. (Note: Many of the inactive periods edited out. Some filed as above indic., some as Cut #13 of Myiodynastes maculatus [LNS 69716.mf]; rest discarded.) Cut 5) (See notes on editing sheet). But when a bird starts to sing, others immed. fly back into lek and sing too; Note: When birds were in peripheral area and silent I tried pb and as soon as it "boomed" the birds all rushed back to lek, took their positions and started booming song.
