This page has the Carolina Parakeet sighting
Observation details
Birds shot and sketched by famous french visitor to Memphis between Dec 20-23, 1831--Alexis de Tocqueville who kept extensive diaries and wrote famed book "Democracy in America". He and his traveling companions (Gustave de Beaumont) were waiting in Memphis from Dec 18-Dec 24 for the extreme cold to break and unfreeze the Mississippi. They left Dec 25, 1831 by boat. Tocqueville confirms his knowledge of the species with a picture in his notebook around Dec 23 of one of the 4 Carolina Parakeets. At least one "Chickasaw Indian" accompanied Tocqueville and Beaumont when the parakeets were encountered
