NOTES: Recordist's Notes: Nov. or Dec. 1956 No. calls: |||||||||/ ||||||||||||||||/||||||||||||||||/||/ (2:20) This was a recording made in the basement of a bird captured by Wishart Campbell at Ajax. Bird had some white feathers dorsally. No yellow on head. 15" Q 2 56100 [Based on the captive situation in which this was recorded and the quality of the sounds, I suspect that this represents the Scold Call described for some Picoides by Winkler and Short (1978. A comparative analysis of acoustical signals in pied woodpeckers (Aves, Picoides). Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist. 160: 1-110). This does not appear to represent any of the calls discussed in BNA or described for this species by Winkler and Short. There appear to be "cryptic" stop-starts at 1:01 and 1:445. Quality changed from 2 to 1-2 (despite unnatural background and the fact that some calls may be overloaded, this is quite good) - CAM - 26 April 2005].
