Observation details
A Coturnix, seen at close range with bins by Dinidu Jayathilake, with facial markings and plumage confirmed the genus. First seen at around 1005h on the short grass boarder by the open field to the middle of the sand filled area. Flushed and flew off to the northern corner. We went to search and was flushed again and went slightly east in to the grass. Flushed again when searched and flew back to the open area more towards the front. From there again flew to the northern corner. None of us were able to properly photograph the bird in flight except Shehan Mudunkotuwa, who got several shots. While searching for this bird eight Blue-breasted Quails (both males and females) flushed off. This bird was almost twice the size of them very clearly larger and more paler brown than the females. Close field observations by Dinidu with facial marks and photographs confirm it to be either Rain Quail female or Common Quail. On some of the photographs the primaries are barred in buff, suggesting this is a Common Quail eliminating Rain Quail. Japanese Quail being the other similar species is way out of range.
