Observation details
Coots that were pretty nervous but no babies yet, and then, out of the Cattails runs a Gallinule which was totally unexpected/I didn’t know they were found this far north. I see another person identified them by hearing near Nye, but the next closest record in the western part of the state is La Crosse. I got audio of the one bird going nuts as I approached the cattails. I kept hoping babies were going to pop out, but no such luck. It ended that there were two birds, but I only got a good look at one. After I backed the kayak off, it came out and was visible for a good extended binocular view and a clear view of the bright red beak with yellow tip, but not long enough to photograph. No question that it was a gallinule, unmistakable.
