Observation details
Perched in dead tree when we first spotted it. It appeared to be about the size of a Red-shouldered Hawk or Cooper's Hawk, much bigger than an American Kestrel. The dark streaks in the face were distinctive with on being vertical, one being horizontal and one going up over the head from above the eyes. The facial pattern fit well for a juvenile Peregrine but the red breast looked very similar to a Cooper's Hawk breast. When I got out of the car to get better photos, the bird flew away. It had swept back, pointed wings and flapped continually until out of sight.
