Observation details
An interesting gull in moult that that stood out among others and which I'm not sure about - bleeding of black along bill and pale inner primaries a bit strange for California at this time of year? Overall pale appearance drew me to this bird, with contrasting dark primaries and tertials and dark tail band. Medium-length bill, mainly straight sided with limited gonys angle, largely two-toned pink/black with some dark bleed along cutting edge, not as hefty as nearby Western Gulls. Head showed fine streaks with mottling around lower neck. Tertials had pale notched fringing with worn pale tips. When landed, the birds' greater coverts quite worn but showing rows of parallel dark spots among an obvious white background; open wing photos show the pale background and spot pattern faded towards the primaries. Obvious primary window seen on on open wing, with inner webs pale with darker outer webs; Venetian blind effect from inner to outer primaries. Undertail pale with some sparse barring, legs pink. Tail never seen well but photos show upper tail coverts with a pale background and widely-spaced light brown bars, retraces with a dark terminal band and variable dark bars on white background. Dark underwing coverts with a hint of faint barring on some feathers.
