Observation details
As I was scoping the lake, I noticed a phalarope with a dark cap and a plain, pale gray, back (no streaking) swimming erratically far down the beach. When the bird took a short flight to escape the harassment of a gull, broad white wing stripes were seen and the mostly white underwings separated it from the very similar Red-necked Phalarope. The bill was a bit more stocky than that of a Red-necked as well, although no yellow was seen at the base. Time of year favors Red Phalarope. Photos.
