ID Shot only showing dark cap, white spot behind the eye, white primary feathers, and wedge shaped bill
Observation details
Rainy and dark conditions. Distant views and some photos that may help positively ID. Female SUSC deduced in the end. A difficult identification for me based on conditions, so please let me know your thoughts... Lone SUSC sea duck resting in the middle of the lake down by the dam side of lake. Overall, dark brown. Stocky duck in appearance. Large wedge shaped bill with what appeared to be feathers extending along the top. Base of bill appeared to be a straight edge. Small white / lighter colored elongated patch behind the eye. Also looked like very slightly lighter feathering in a squarish patch around nape area. Bill dark, but lighter in color, possibly light black / gray. No noticeable lighter feathers at base of straight edged bill. Possibly suggesting a sub-adult bird. Crown of head appeared slightly darker than cheeks and face giving a slightly capped appearance. Overall, a very dark brown bird. The only confusing part was a visible flash / patch of white in the wings. Initially I was thinking of white winged scoter WWSC but the white appeared to be at the very tip of the primaries rather than the speculum. Tail slightly cocked up on occasions similar to a ruddy RUDU, but not as erect. I revisited the site an hour later and could not relocate the bird.
