Observation details
Brigid first spotted a bird hopping around within an open space in the middle of the base of a shrub. Initially our best bino views were back lit and all we could see well was the eye-ring. Vesper was the tentative initial ID, but it lacked the expected fine streaking in the breast and flanks, and it seemed too dark in places. We agreed a better view was necessary. We spent the next fifteen minutes walking around the shrub (on a steep slope no less). I was able to get into a position where the open space was clearly visible. Stefan walked around the other side until the bird hopped, but mostly ran, into a relatively open spot. This is where I got all the best photos. It was clear at that point, and the photos should show this as well, that the bird was actually a Grasshopper Sparrow. Great find and teamwork to sus out the right ID! Decent photos showing field marks (including yellow wrist-bend/outer lesser wing covert feathers) coming soon.
