Observation details
Female accidentally flushed off nest with single chick. Remarkable experience. As we tiptoed around a potential Vesper Sparrow nest, Jane flushed this bird by accident. She first thought it was a grouse, then I thought it was a kestrel. Then it dawned on me that it was a whip-poor-will. On our return past this spot, we flushed it again and saw the baby. We quickly departed the site after taking a few photos. The female was seen only in "bits and pieces" as it flopped around in the low vegetation, but never in the open, and only stayed still once when I saw a piece of the eye and bill and tail. A brief view in flight showed the buff outer tail feathers of the female.
