Observation details
Just in Australian waters north of Norfolk Island en route to New Caledonia One pale phase bird in the wake, found by Robert Flood, was presumably attracted to our oil slick, and was watched for ten minutes before it departed. Excellent views and photos taken. White rump, belly and throat; black breast band, upperparts and tail; narrow white bands on underwing. Tail forked with blunt tips to fork. Gliding flight, kicking off the oil slick now and again. Legs projecting beyond tail in flight.
