🍊 1-2 juv ho well, prob two? finally figuring out this mystery thrush/BBPL caller of the past week + , screecher , we feel pretty sure by now prob GHOW, but you can hear on one of the recordings tonight how wild these calls are ! — — Merlin ID as BBPL! and as Northern Saw-whet-Owl, though many times as GHOW on one recording. — — The craziest calls tonight sounding like a songbird, like a thrush/plover/flycatcher, with no screech in them at all. — — I have NEVER heard Oregon GHOW sound like this, and have stayed up at night outdoors with maybe ~ 100 juv GHOW encounters in the past. WOW! Wild. So weird! Do eastern GHOW sound different than west coast? — — “how variable juvenile owls” calling can be. — — note: this owl has been calling here 1-2 weeks now, took this long to identify it “for certain” : Caleb had been getting it only on dawn surveys early, until 10/07 calling after sunset and after last light , got better recordings , and best of all tonight. — — the Northern Lights happening tonight from “severe” G4 storm. : “ NEW YORK -- A potentially severe geomagnetic storm is expected to trigger the northern lights, or aurora borealis, around the New York City area this week. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center issued a geomagnetic storm watch for the G4 storm, the second-highest classification. "A fast CME erupted from the Sun the evening of 8 Oct and is likely to arrive at Earth on 10 Oct. This CME has been analyzed and there is potential to reach G4 levels upon arrival and throughout CME passage," the SWPC posted on social media. “ and : “ A coronal mass ejection (CME) erupted from the sun Tuesday and is projected to arrive at Earth sometime on Thursday. CMEs trigger geomagnetic storms which, if they are strong enough, can produce brighter and more active displays of the northern lights that can be seen further south from the pole and even, in cases like this one, as far south as the United States. This means that the aurora might be visible for many northern states and some of the lower Midwest to Oregon over the next few nights. “
