Park Avenue Armory: Chimney Swift roosts. Two of the four sites (SW & SE) were in use. Views were from the green star on the median @ 66th St. & Park Ave.
Observation details
• At 1955 seven (7) swifts were seen and heard when I arrived. • One at 2044 [chasing a bird crosstown towards the east side.] The Chimney Swift roost at the Park Avenue Armory between 66th-67th Street was viewed from the median on the south side of 66th Street. 🔲 Eleven (11) swifts were observed entering two individual roosts on the south side of the Armory during the count. Initially, I watched without optics, but I utilized handheld binoculars for the last few minutes to accurately count the swifts. The first swift entered the roost during the 17th minute before sunset, and the last entry was during the 29th minute after sunset. The highest number of swifts seen simultaneously in flight was five (5) seen during the 8th minute after sunset. Sunset on June 28th is at 8:22p (2022) [based on NOAA's Map]: • -17' before SS (+3): 2005 SE (2), 2020 SW • +10' after SS (+1): 2022 SE • +20' after SS (+2): 2033 SW (2) • +30' after SS (+5): 2042 SW (2), 2047 SE (2), 2051 SW TOTAL = 11 with 3 swifts exiting the roost A total of three (3) swifts were seen exiting the chimney with the 1st during the 7th minute before sunset and the last during the 26th minute after sunset. Eight (8) appear to be occupying the chimney by the end of the count. The highest number of entries per minute occurred during the 11th, 20th, and 25th minutes after sunset, with 2 entries per minute. The count started at 2002.0 (20.0 min. before sunset) and ended 53 minutes later at 2055.0 (33.0 min. after sunset).
