Observation details
I think it was two males and two females. Terrible digiscoped videos taken. Medium-sized shorebird; both sexes observed; compared side by side with Wilson's Phalarope; straight and thin needle-like black bill, slightly shorter and thicker than Wilson's Phalarope; subtly smaller bodied than Wilson's Phalarope. Alternate plumage males had similar plumage to female but a bit duller; bright contrasting white throat; rusty red on sides and back of neck; back largely black with several prominent and relatively wide buffy stripes; black crown; more prominent black mask through the eye than Wilson's Phalarope; dark gray wash on upper breast and flanks. Alternate plumage females had more colorful and boldly patterned plumage than males; beautiful deep reddish cinnamon color on sides and back of neck; boldly contrasting white throat; extensive black crown and sides of face; small white spot above eye; back largely black with several prominent and relatively wide buffy stripes; dark gray wash on upper breast and flanks.
