Observation details
Dark large bird with long beak, distinct mostly black and white face, and that prominent red crest. First heard its slow pecking (hammering)on wood and then a call (recorded) within the hidden woods just NW of the Wetlands Overlook and Seasonal Trail, then saw enough of its face through a tree to ID. Poor but identifiable photos of that bird. We observed for 10 minutes before it slipped away, and we heard it (or another) further north. We continued NW along the River Trail and found it again (or another?) at the Riparian Forest Site, at one point it sat in full view several minutes on the top of a dead bare tree in the sunlight. Good photos. It flew off, and we thought it called from across the river. Another was heard calling then found as we walked up the Ridgecrest Trail. Hanging upside down busily feeding on clump of leaves (insects) on high banch on trail's edge. Photos. It later flew off southwest. Fun sightings and hearings! Our LONG-time wish for this particular bird has been wonderfully satisfied!
