Observation details
Flushed off the ground and into a Eucalyptus right next to the bathroom in the lower campground, (34°02'57.4"N 119°33'47.7"W). Obviously a wet bird, but highly contrasting wingbars, spectacles, lack of streaks, and perhaps hints of a rufous wash on the flanks make this, I believe, a SY male Bay-breasted Warbler. Was walking up to hike to Potato Harbor, not even birding, when this interesting-looking bird flew up-- the wingbars and yellow wash were apparent even without magnification. I threw my backpack on the mud and quickly pulled out my bins and camera to get some documentation shots ("I've never seen you move that fast") to get on the bird- the structure indicated warbler to me in the field, and I was pretty sure it was not one I'm familiar with. For the period of observation, it was relatively motionless, cleaning its bill on the branch, and silent. It stayed there for a few minutes before I moved on. Tentative second record for Santa Cruz Island, after one was found at the Ranch house in 2022.
