Observation details
Two shearwaters came within 100m of the boat. Instant impressions were that they were both puffinus sp. The first bird was 3/4 of the size of the second. I fired off shots of both birds after identifying the second as a Manx. As Barolo is the only considerably smaller than Manx I reviewed the photos to reveal the rounded head and pale secondary panel of Barolo. The pale cheek was apparent in some photos and contrasts the ‘torpedo’ head of Manx. The birds flew into a dead zone caused by sun glare and were lost before they left it.
