Observation details

Incredible and surprising find among the Pink-footed Shearwaters south of Santa Rosa Island. The Pink-footed flocks were spooking easily, but one flock sat in front of the boat where we found the Streaked. It was only seen briefly by a few people before it flushed away with the flock; however, a few people had photos of it so we pursued and scanned all the flocks until we finally found it again sitting on the water. We could not approach too closely, but we did work the flock carefully and had extended looks of it on the water. It was a large goose-necked shearwater with a white head and breast with darker streaks behind the eye on the rear of the head and down the outer parts of the neck. The long bill was ivory-colored with a darker tip. The upperparts were brown with pale edges to the back feathers. The undersides were entirely bright white from the throat to the undertail coverts.
