Recorded from site in spruce forest supporting thick moss growth on upper surface of tree branches.
Observation details
Likely underestimate of total count. As the cloud ceiling lowered, visibility reduced, and light rain started falling the intensity of murrelet calling and flights over the forest increased substantially. Singles, pairs, and groups up to 5 birds were observed flying and calling from the ocean and over the adjacent spruce forest. We suspected that the contact calling over the forest had several purposes including encouraging nestlings ready to fledge to take wing.
