Observation details
Heard hummingbird wing-whir whose tone I did not recognize; was not able to get a visual on the bird for a while, but observed it doing a dive display and recorded wing noise, including during the end of the dive display. Later, got photos of the bird from three perches in the vicinity. All photos show solid gorget without streaking, eliminating CAHU (which I also saw in the vicinity); straight, stout bill, suggesting not BCHU; and lack of obvious rufous underside, eliminating RUHU. Pale, distinct band of feathers visible on side of face just above gorget matches this species. Solid-colored red gorget lit up beautifully in one of the photos.
