Observation details
two similar looking birds on different days. The first bird was being considered for Smithsonian gull. This would be a very unlikely in the summer. The bird displays a palle eye and a lack of any red in the eye ring. as well, it’s back and wings are significantly lighter than Vega Gull. The second bird sitting by the sewage pond with other Vega and Glaucous gulls is superficially similar with a dark spot on the tip of its bill in a different spot. There is more white patchy area towards the posterior of the back and wings than the first Gull. The wing tips seem more messy with what seems to be crescent white displayed. The eye also appears to be darker although without the orange or red of the Vega. There was some discussion for the first Gull being a Smithsonian Gull. However, considering location and taxonomic history is it possible that both gulls are Vega x Glaucous hybrids
