Media notes
When I got to the park, two female Mallard were displaying to each other. Later and under the Lewvan brdige, two female Marrlards were fighting. (same ones?) For a while a third one watched but then departed with a brood of Class 2 ducklings whie they kept fighting. About 200 meters downstream, two very small Mallard ducklings were swimming with no adult in sight. They swam all the way to the fighiting ducks and kept going. They were totally ignored.. I guess I'll never know why they fought.... I captured 25 seconds of the fight. They were fighting before I got there and still fighting when I left. Les Sherman Park, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. 22 June 2024
Observation details
2 females were displaying to each other near the pump house. Later, under the Lewvan bridge, there were 3 females. One was watching and later swam away with a brood of 6 Class 2B. further on, there were 2 small Class 1a ducklings apparently without a parent. They swam towards the fighting females which were still fighting and neither seemed to pay any attention to them. I have never seen females fighting and don't know if the 2 displaying earlier were the same fighting. Would be interesting to know why. It didn't seem to be over possession of ducklings.....
