Observation details
Continuing at Cape Francis, the northern tip of the island (29.9046216, -81.2776916). Initially not seen with group of ROYTE resting on beach but spotted by Jason Glatt and identified by Shane Carroll as it flew in to rest with ROYTE. ELTE spent the rest of the time we observed it resting and occasionally preening. Medium-sized tern with long slender bicolored bill, light orange at base and yellow towards tip, that was slightly down-curved with gonydeal angle closer to base compared to nearby ROYTE. Smaller than ROYTE and CATE. Forehead speckled black turning into a long black shaggy crest starting level to the eye. Black spots before eyes. Pale gray back with the outer 3-4 flight feathers darker in appearance. Pale rump, shorter pale tail, pale undersides with what appears to be a very faint fading yellowish flush in lower chest but that detail is difficult to ascertain, black legs. As a note for chasers, the hike out to the bird is 3 miles. Bring plenty of water and pay attention to the UV indexes, they have been becoming very high very quickly. Be safe and enjoy all the baby/young birds this fantastic birding area has to offer! Thank you Shane Carroll for introducing me to it!
