Observation details

Came out here to do some herping and was greeted to the song of a Red Crossbill as soon as I stepped out onto the lookout. An adult male was perched on a Chestnut Oak singing, and eventually flew over to one of the pines off the lookout, where two females and another adult male were feeding. This was definitely not something I was expecting to run into today. There were two pines off the lookout, one growing up right next to the cliffside. I stood next to the pine at the edge of the lookout, eye level with the top of the tree, and waited. To my astonishment, the crossbills actually cooperated, and two females flew over and perched in the pine right in front of me. A young male then joined them, flying in from another direction. Didn't stay long, and eventually left the pine and continued down along the ridge. Amazing encounter!! Type confirmed via audio analyzed by the Finch Network.
