Observation details
There were two birds for sure. I could hear one answering the other one, and there may have been a third bird, The third bird (or one of the other two birds) was doing a perfect imitation of Steller's Jay and Virginia rail. The Chat had the jay and the rail calls memorized so well they even fooled the Merlin app. I was puzzled at first, hearing the mimic calls coming from the same clump of willows as the chat was calling from. I kept waiting for the Steller's Jay to fly out of the willows, but it never did. I knew a rail never calls from up in the air in a clump of willows. It was then I finally figured out what the chat was up to. I even recorded on Merlin the chat doing the mimic calls. I would be interesting to have eBird review the mimic calls made by the chat.
