Observation details
Same individual as previously reported. Another insane encounter, bird was singing consistently at 12:00pm with a mixed flock of Canada Warblers, Eastern Towhees, Veery, and Gray Catbirds mobbing it. It broke every rule of being a saw-whet and perched in the relative open over the trail. It appeared nonchalant to my presence and hunted actively in front of me, at one point flying over my shoulder. Later saw it attempt to capture an Ovenbird with little success; later observed it catching a small mammal and eating it. Roosted in hemlock where it was harassed by a Red Squirrel; the owl fluffed and opened its wings in a defensive posture while clicking bill. Presumably an SY male due to singing/general lack of survival skills. Reported late to prevent harassment.
