Observation details
Red gape in distinct downward frown, red orbital ring and dark iris (though not pitch black), bill long and slender; bright yellow w/ large black (upper/anterior) and red (lower) gonydeal spot. Dull yellow legs. Mantle marginally darker than HERG and RBGU but not noticeably so. Midsize between Herring and Ring-billed in size. Primaries, tertials, and coverts appear to be those of a younger bird but most of the rest of the plumage and especially the bare parts are advanced enough to be a probable third cycle. I’m going to go out on a limb w/ this one and categorize it as albertaensis due to its somewhat larger appearance, very long bill, and only marginally darker mantle shade than RBGU present (at most angles I couldn’t even tell the difference). Ssp classification for this species doesn’t appear to be an exact science but anecdotally this would be the more expected population to vagrate into Ontario as well, though there is an accepted californicus record by Alan Wormington on Nov. 22, 2005. Other previous records by Alan are listed as albertaensis.
