Observation details
A medium sized shorebird with quite long legs and a long neck and long black bill. Bill became pointy towards the tip. Behavior: bird walked on mud and at waters edge hammering bill into the mud with the rhythm of a Dowitcher. Occasionally walked around with head held high but mostly spent feeding. It preened a couple of times and was silent. Vent and belly was white. Flanks and sides of vent were streaked with heavy, wavy barring that continued up its neck and across its breast to an extent. Barring on. Breast and neck was more muddled and less clearly demarcated. The sun was pretty and I was getting a good amount of heat shimmer which perhaps along with wear or dirt or reflection gave the appearance of a rufous upper breast and throat. Once I got better looks, closer it became more apparent that rufous was confined more to the cheek. Coverts and scaps looked worn and old, mostly black with some white edging. Crown seemed dark, eyeline bright white and bold.
