Observation details
**MEGA - first Brooklyn record, third for NYC, and generally very rare from shore anywhere on Long Island. Small gull flew by, eastbound. Binoculars up, and the wing pattern was immediately striking. Not believing my eyes (or brain), I immediately dropped the binoculars and switched to my camera. I took as many photos as I could while the bird was still relatively close, but it kept its heading, roughly Eastward towards Dead Horse. Upperwings a combination of black, white, and gray triangles. Underwings similar to BOGU with slim trailing black edges. Head partially hooded with dusky gray, bill small though I didn’t see it very well. Photo timestamps span seven seconds, the whole encounter was certainly less than ten.
