Observation details
This bird spent the entire winter in a residential neighborhood in Revelstoke, sheltering under backyard decks, foraging under bird feeders, and putting the run on domestic cats. It departed in spring not to be seen again. A partridge-like bird with a sharp black line running through a red eye and matching bill colour. The legs were also vivid red with long red talons and it ran from protected site to protected site with a leg extended forward gait that covered ground quickly. It left obvious long-toed tracks tracks in the snow. It preferred to run than fly.
