Observation details
As reported this morning by Josh Greenfield! It’s likely at least one of these is a continuing bird found on 6/17 by Mark Martucci and Lyann Comrack. Where it’s been over the past week-plus and where the other one came from is unknown. Both individuals were flying around foraging in “Pond 11” of the southern WTP ponds before landing on some concrete pipes and resting with the Forster’s Terns. One even caught a small fish! Tiny, dainty terns, dwarfed by the adjacent Forster’s and they have proportionately smaller bills and legs. Breeding adults with bright yellow bills and black tips, black caps with pale foreheads, silvery backs and dark outer primaries. Photos to be added shortly. Seen with Josh, Sam Schmidt, Emmett Iverson, and Jim Lomax. Thanks to Josh for the locating them and getting the word out, as well as staying on the birds until we got here. These individuals represent the 6th or 7th Yolo County record, and the first successfully chased since 2005.
