Observation details
Nice surprise! The world's largest and rarest loon paid me a visit at Cattle Point. I sent out the alert and the bird stayed for a good 20 minutes, long enough for the entire Tuesday birding group to come see. Eventually, it continued to swim away to the east towards Discovery/Chatham Islands. Huge, bulky loon with long, ivory-coloured bill and straight culmen giving the bill an upturned appearance. Blocky head with abrupt forehead and lumpy crown. Very pale/buffy plumage overall (particularly on head and neck) with low contrast plumage, lacking the jagged neck markings of Common Loon. Non-breeding plumage. Photos attached.
