Observation details
Outstanding bird for the county! Huge thank you to FWC biologist, Jackie Gomar, for the intel and awesome search and location by Mark Penkower and Dan Cimbaro! Small nuthatch with white underside, gray back, and brown head. It appears to be a breeding pair - one bird, presumably the male, was vocalizing regularly. Photos, audio, and video obtained. It’s a serious hike to this bird. Park at trail 13 directly across from E camp. It’s a 4 mile round trip walk and the vast majority of the trail is underwater. There’s is about 1.2 miles of (wet) trail before you need to cross a wetland with water varying from knee to waist height depending where you cross. After the wetland, it’s about another mile to the location. (26.883946, -80.382668)
