Observation details
The group watched this pair for quite some time from afar and were treated to a great show. We saw both the male and female visiting the nest, and heard the young food-begging from within the nest cavity. The nest was down low (maybe 5 feet up) at the base of a burned Jeffrey Pine that had lost the bark at the base. On one particularly long foraging bout of the female, the male stayed on a tree close by doing a little feeding and spending a lot of time preening, and occasionally drumming. The female came in and fed the young, and then the male came and entered the nest. Jon thought the male was possibly going in to remove fecal sacs. On several occasions the pair both flew together into the adjacent unburned forest as well. All in all, we saw lots of behaviors, heard drumming, heard a variety of calls including the pik contact call, the rattle, another interaction call, and heard the young calling from the nest.
