Observation details
Shyly swimming around Herring Gull as it tore into a freshly dead drake eider just fifty meters south of the road, plucking what appered to be flesh scraps from surrounding water as opportunities arose. Occasionally it would fly, riding the wind low over the water for five to thirty seconds before settling again. Absolutely remarkable bird in perfect breeding plumage save for a light peppering of white feathers on either side of the base of the bill forming a subtle 'moustache' of sorts. Hood a charcoal grey with a crisp deep black border. Medium-dark grey mantle. Bill black with a neat yellow tip, and reddish tinge visible around eye. In flight, clean jet black outer primaries with crisp white tips, white secondaried, and underwing pale grey with a smudgy shadow tracing the distal portion of the underwing coverts. Tail slightly forked.
