Observation details
Adult in breeding plumage. First observed flying in from the bay (with several common terns). For 10-12 minutes, the tern hunted on the incoming tide to the east, over toward the Mere Point peninsula. It made several dives to the water, but did not appear to come up with anything. It was last observed heading high over the Mere Point peninsula tree line to the east, possibly to Middle Bay, not far away. Noted large, slow-flying tern (ring-billed gull size) with reddish-orange bill, black cap and black legs. In flight, noted distinctive dark color on the primaries underneath. Tail slightly forked. Distant photos obtained.
