Observation details
An eventful but sad day for our House Wren family who lived in the gourd hanging off our deck. All seemed normal in the morning, with Enzo (the male) and L'Wren (the female) bringing food into the nest, and we assumed the babies were being tended to and fed. But a few hours later, my husband saw 3 tiny babies on the ground under the nest. We thought they were dead and that maybe the parents threw the weak ones out, and we hoped a couple more were in the the gourd. But then I saw one move. And then another. Two were alive! The Raptor Trust told us to put them in a box lined with a towel and keep them warm and quiet until we could get them to someone who could help (we could not drive down to Raptor Trust that day). As we waited for the wildlife expert at Franklin Lakes Animal Hospital to return to the office to see if we could bring them to her (5 minutes away from us), my husband witnessed Enzo or L'Wren throw another baby out. I put it in the box. Finally, the last baby was thrown out, and was also put in the box. We spoke to Franklin Lakes, and my husband drove them to their wildlife expert, who cared for them until the next day, when she took them to The Raptor Trust, where they are now receiving care. My husband named them Groucho, Harpo, Chico, and Zeppo. Zeppo is not in the photo, but the other three are. We don't know why the parents threw them all out, but possibly the gourd is infested with lice or mites and they did the only thing they could do. But who knows? Enzo and L'Wren seem to be back in that same gourd, and although we have a fresh gourd waiting to be hung up, we aren't sure what to do, because they appear re-settled in there. So I think we may not interfere and see what happens, unless it is very clear that they have vacated the gourd.
