Observation details
Breeding colony on multiple islands/rocks 1 km from port. We were on a birdwatching excursion by boat. Cloudy, rainy day. The bird expert guide (9 years experience) said there were more puffins than he had ever seen and the Captain attributed it to the weather. We estimated based on counting by 1000s. This is a rough estimate. Puffins mixed with Razorbills were flying close over our boat, high in the air and in huge flotillas in the water. Photos show 1000s of puffins in the flotillas and 1000s swarming over the top of the largest rock island. We did not go to the back side of the rocks. It was an emotional trip for the birders on board.
