Observation details
We almost passed these by at a distance after seeing a number of Scripps's Murrelets already. One of the birds was swimming with its tail cocked up so we went over to check them out and found that all three birds were Craveri's Murrelets. This is on the early end of arrival dates for postbreeding birds off southern California. Black and white murrelets with long tails (often held cocked) and bills. The black border on the face was relatively straight and continued on to the chin. The black on the chin was more obvious than usual; possibly related to the early date. Does that wear as the season progresses and become less obvious?
