Pair of adult Ancient Murrelets with two fledglings.
Observation details
Here was a nice surprise! While I was walking back down the jetty I heard high pitched peeping begging calls over in the entrance channel not too far off. When I finally tracked down the little birds making the sounds I was surprised to find a pair of adult Ancient Murrelets with two fuzzy fledglings! The fledglings were too young to dive still so the parents were diving frequently and bringing them little fish. All four were working their way up the channel (i.e. towards the bay) fairly quickly with the incoming tide. After awhile they started moving out further into the channel and away from shore, I think maybe because there were a couple fishermen on the shore they wanted to avoid and the parents starting giving occasional sharper calls as they did this (these sounded something like a songbird on land might do when scolding a ground predator, not a sound I'd heard a murrelet make before).
